Making a Will

// Inheritance and making sure your loved ones are cared for.

Nearly two thirds of adults in the UK have not made a Will, which means their possessions, money, property, and even dependent children could be left with someone they have not chosen. This is referred to as dying intestate and means the law states who your estate passes to, which can cause all sorts of problems for your loved ones.

Research has also found that a top reason for adults not having a Will is the belief that they don’t have anything valuable to leave. If this is the case, you are probably worth more than you realise and it is still important to make your wishes clear, as a Will also includes appointing guardians for children. Today’s modern families are complex and by having a Will it makes inheritance a far quicker process and ensures no one is missed out. You should also be updating your Will every five years and after any major life changes such as, marriage, divorce, deaths, births and moving home; because if something should happen, your Will may become invalid.

Our probate solicitors will offer clear and practical legal advice on the matters to consider when writing your Will, such as:

  • Naming the Executors of your Will
  • Including specific bequests and legacies
  • Setting up trusts
  • Appointing Legal Guardians for children
  • Managing tax
  • Dealing with foreign assets

Naming an Executor is appointing a person or persons who will sort out your property and finances when you die and carries out the instructions set out in your Will. It is important to choose someone you trust and many of our clients name us as their Executors. Acting as Executor allows our solicitors to use their specialist knowledge to ensure that all aspects of your estate are dealt with swiftly, correctly and in accordance with your wishes.

We are pleased to partner with Cancer Research UK, Queenscourt Hospice and the RNLI in offering their free Will service. Please contact us for further information as some campaigns only run at certain times of the year.
