//spotting the signs and applying for a domestic violence injunction
Recognising you are a victim of domestic abuse is hard, as it could have developed slowly over time and leave you feeling confused about your relationship. An estimated 1.3 million adults experienced domestic abuse last year but many more are probably suffering in silence. Domestic abuse is a crime and it can come in many forms such as:
- Physical force
- Emotional or financial abuse
- Threating violence
- Sexual assault
- Stalking
- Controlling behaviour
Spotting the signs aren’t always clear either, especially with controlling behaviour. If you can relate to one or more of these statements or have spotted them in someone else – you may be a victim of domestic abuse and should seek help.
- I’m always being criticised
- They are picking my clothes or choosing what I eat
- They are constantly checking my phone
- I feel isolated from my family and friends
- They control my money
- I’m constantly being threatened
- They are extremely jealous of other people in my life
- They are stopping me from going out or doing things
If you think you are experiencing domestic abuse, you need to get help. There are many helpful websites you can visit for more information but if you or someone you know is in immediate danger, always call 999.
Our solicitors are trained to deal with domestic abuse cases and can help you in applying for a Domestic Violence Injunction. This is a court order that will:
- protect you or your child from being harmed or threatened by the person who’s abused you – this is called a ‘non-molestation order’
- decide who can live in the family home or enter the surrounding area – this is called an ‘occupation order’
It is a criminal offence for the person named in the order to break it and can be arrested if they do.
